Virtual Academic & Policy Symposium: Migration Research, Scholarship, and Policy at a Time of Multiple Crises (virtual)

Date:
Tuesday, November 10, 2020 - 09:00

The Center for Migration Studies of New York (CMS) will hold its 2020 Academic and Policy Symposium, which will be titled “Migration Research, Scholarship, and Policy at a Time of Multiple Crises,” on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. To expand participation and out of an abundance of caution, this year’s symposium will take place virtually.

This symposium will examine migration scholarship and policy at a time of multiple crises for migrants, refugees and their communities. In particular, it will:

  • Explore the COVID-19 pandemic, related policies, its disastrous economic fall-out, and the deep social inequalities that have been exposed and exacerbated as a result. Participants will analyze trends in international migration and migration policies in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, racism, and violence.
  • Analyze other relevant crises including systemic racial injustice, the ravages of climate change, rising exclusionary nationalism, and the crisis in refugee protection and migration governance. The symposium will also explore how migrants and refugees, many of whom are persons of color, have experienced these crises.
  • Present how policy-makers and advocates have and should respond to these overlapping crises that shape migration dynamics and what strategies are effective in this context. The event will feature state and local policy responses that prioritize the protection and integration of migrants and refugees and treat immigrants and their families as vital members of their communities.

This is CMS’s seventh annual academic and policy conference, showcasing the work of leading scholars, policy-makers, and advocates on international migration.
